Buying or selling a car in Prague and unsure how the ownership transfer (přepis) works? The procedure is the same as in other Czech cities; what differs are the offices and the waiting times. Here is how to get it done quickly in Prague.
Where to go in Prague
In Prague, a change of vehicle owner is handled by the transport departments of the district (city part) offices. You do not usually have to choose the office by your place of residence, so it pays to find out where the nearest free appointments are. Many offices also require you to book an appointment in advance; without one you may wait a very long time.
What to bring
- the small and large registration certificate,
- the purchase contract or another proof of acquiring the vehicle,
- an ID (for companies, an extract from the commercial register),
- confirmation of valid compulsory liability insurance for the new operator,
- a valid registration inspection, if the office requires it,
- a power of attorney, if someone else acts for you.
Deadline and fee
The new owner must report the change within 10 working days of acquiring the vehicle. The official fee for a change of owner of a passenger car is CZK 800.
How to save time
The biggest delays in Prague are appointments at the offices and a missing document. We help you check the documents, arrange compulsory insurance and handle the transfer under power of attorney. We pick the office with the shortest waiting time and you do not have to go anywhere.
